We all know that exercise is good for us so why do we struggle to find the motivation? When it comes to creating a healthy lifestyle, enjoying exercise is THE number one factor that will help you stick to it. Instead of putting exercise on your to-do list, follow these simple tips and start to enjoy exercise more.
Set Goals That Aren’t Related to How You Look
It’s easy to think you’ll be happy if you lose weight and/or gain lean muscle but goals that are based on appearance can actually be quite demotivating. People like to see results quickly and one workout isn’t going to get you those abs you’ve been dreaming of.
Instead of being in it just to lose 5kgs or build a better booty, set goals that focus on your strength, fitness and/or mental health first. When you see your weights or time increase or feel less stressed, the more immediate satisfaction will make you glad you showed up. Keep showing up and the appearance based goals will make themselves happen.
Stop Doing Things You Don’t Enjoy
Stop forcing yourself to go to the gym or go for a run because you “have to”. There are lots of ways to be fit and healthy so just do something active you enjoy. If you love dancing, playing basketball with your friends or getting lost in nature, do more of that and forget the rest.
Mix It Up
Even if you love something, doing the same thing every day gets boring. Schedule variety into your workout routine by assigning different types of exercise for different days e.g. lift weights on Wednesdays, go on an active date on Saturdays and relax with Sunday yoga.
Crank Up the Music
The right kind of music can totally fuel an awesome workout! Make playlists that pump you up for different types of exercise and don’t forget to sing and dance between sets.
Savior the Quiet
While music can motivate, sometimes to get the relaxation benefits of exercise you need to switch it off. Be present, enjoy the sound of the waves, the wind or the birds and just be.
Make Exercise Time for You
In our endlessly busy lives, exercising is time that’s just for you. Instead of avoiding the gym because you’re stressed, give yourself permission to take 30 minutes or an hour out of your day to look after your physical and mental health. You’ll feel so much better for doing so!
Find a Fitness Friend
What’s not more fun with a friend? Not only will you enjoy exercise more, you’ll be helping someone else live a healthier and happier life too.
Stop hating on yourself for being fat, unfit or unable to do something and start respecting yourself for what you CAN do. Celebrate the small victories. Did you show up and get your workout done? Did you manage to do one more push-up than last week? Negative self-talk will destroy any potential enjoyment you might get from being active so focus on the positive.
